It’s the question that has been puzzling and befuddling students for weeks. What happened to the lettuce? You know, that large trough on either side of the salad bar in the cafeteria, usually filled with lettuce and occasionally some cucumber slices? Well, for weeks now that salad has been replaced by various, unidentifiable vegetables (if we can even call them that). The mixture often contains a variety of colors such as white, yellow, red and orange, and the strange shapes and textures have been a great mystery to many of the healthier students at Kungsholmen.
As a salad eater, I have recently started analysing the content of this strange lettuce replacement. By photo documentation, various taste tests and lab analysis, I have come to the conclusion that the main culprit replacing our beloved lettuce is chinese cabbage, also known as “salladskål” in Swedish. This strange vegetable looks like a form of white lettuce but its flavour is more closely related to cabbage. Another vegetable I found was carrots, however these were chopped in a barbaric fashion to form strange, irregular lumps, making them harder to identify (and digest). Lastly, the final ingredient is corn from a tin, or “burkmajs” as the Swedes call it.
In conclusion, I think I speak for us all when I say that we wish the real lettuce will make its return to our cafeteria. For now, all we can do is hope, pray, and eat a lot of “pizzasallad”.
